"I am currently working on a project entitled ’Land of Water: constructing the hydraulic environment in colonial Suriname, c. 1650-1850". I am drawing on the perspectives of environmental history to understand how humans and other living beings worked towards socio-ecological transformations in the Dutch colony of Suriname in the eighteenth century. Like historians of technology and architecture, I focus on the built environment - in particular the colony's water infrastructure - as a palimpsest of past practices, technologies and values. By combining the perspectives of these two historical methodologies, as well as other environmental humanities disciplines, I aim to contribute to current debates about the legacies of colonialism, slavery and natural resource extraction."
