ULB scientific meeting dedicated to "Planetary boundaries and geopolitical fractures"

Campus Usquare - Salle du BRIAS

— 12:00 - 17:30

This year, the third edition of the ULB scientific meeting on planetary boundaries will focus on (geo)political issues and their impact on environmental research.

Over the past few decades, international policies have sought to establish programmes, some of them ambitious, to reverse these trends and define sustainable socio-ecological trajectories. However, recent geopolitical upheavals are undermining these advances.

Given that concepts such as safe operating space (Rockström, 2009) were designed primarily with a view to 'global and politically useful knowledge " (Turnhout, 2016), recent national and international political developments are extremely worrying and lead us to reflect on the dynamics and influences between political realities and research. That is why we propose to focus our third day of internal conferences on two related themes:

The first concerns the study of shifts in environmental and social parameters in relation to national and international circumstances.

The second concerns the place of research in the current political climate – in general, and in particular in the fields of climate and social and ecological transformations.
