Academic coordinators: Catherine Bouland (CR4) Luisa Moretto, Catalina-Codutra Dobre and Giuseppe Faldi (LoUIsE); in collaboration with Ananda Kohlbrenner et Dimitri Crespin from Collectif calm-e.

Living cartography, or Map-it, is a puzzle of views and observations. It involves going into the space being studied and taking stock, with all your senses, of the different issues at stake. This method is appreciated in architecture and urban studies, but it's not the only one. It makes it possible to mobilise players with diverse profiles and to sum up their impressions, and for this it is a perfect inter- and trans-disciplinary methodological tool.

Developed at the University of Hasselt (Huybrechts, Dressen, and Schepers 2012), the Map-it method is an open source cartography. ‘Following exploratory walks, the Map-it workshops ask participants to use a series of self-adhesive icons to record the findings, problems and opportunities associated with the presence of water in an area on a plot of land. As the map is covered with icons, remarks and comments, a common diagnosis emerges and development proposals are drawn up collectively’. (Dobre, Kohlbrenner, and Nalpas 2019, p.46).

The workshop will take place in three stages:

  • A walk along the water in the Solbosch district to identify the effects of the risks associated with climate change and to reflect on the solutions that can remedy or mitigate them.

  • A moment to pool the observations made in order to produce a joint diagnosis.

  • An opportunity to reflect on the method itself: its advantages, limitations & how to implement it?
