Beyond geology and politics. The industrialisation of gold mining in Mali
39 avenue Franklin Roosevelt, 1050 Bruxelles
— 12:00 - 14:00This work is based on the hypothesis that nature and society are inseparable, both empirically and analytically. It aims not only to question the impact of one on the other, but also to show that dialogue between the hard sciences and the social sciences is a prerequisite for overcoming the dichotomy between nature and society. This interdisciplinary project is based on research into gold mining in Mali since the time of French colonisation.
Guillaume Bagayoko has a doctorate in political science from the University of Lille, is a research associate at CERAPS and IFSRA and teaches at the Lille Institute of Political Studies. He works on the political economy of mineral resources. In 2023 he defended a thesis on the industrial extraction of gold in Mali. His thesis examines Belgian, European, French and Soviet interventions in Mali between 1960 and 1990.
