Les mondes à faire de Doudou Diop. Cinema, migration and environmental justice

ULB campus Usquare - A.0.05

— 14:15 - 17:00

Building on the themes explored during the screening, this research seminar will delve into questions of decolonizing research and cultural extractivism.. The goal of this seminar is to reflect on the following issues:

(a) The challenges of so-called “participatory” research—specifically, the additional workload for participants who become co-producers of knowledge and the negotiation of the vulnerabilities of individuals and the struggles involved.

(b) The implications of neocolonialism in research methodologies—countering the appropriation of knowledge by the Global North, questioning the legitimacy of researchers' voices and positions, and addressing the structural inequalities in North-South academic partnerships.

(c) At the intersection of these two axes, the crucial issue of fair compensation for participants and experts involved.

Invited speakers:

  • Antoine Hennion (Professor at École Nationale Supérieure des Mines de Paris, Centre De Sociologie De L'innovation)

  • Mamadou Khouma Gueye (Filmmaker and co-founder of the Tééméri Bop Koñ festival in Dakar - ‘A thousand and one street corners’)

  • Matthias Lammers (Anthropologist, Vrouwenraad & Garance ASBL)
