Exceeding planetary boundaries: implications and effects for academic freedom and researcher engagement

— 12:15 - 13:30Anchoring human activity within planetary boundaries, while ensuring a decent quality of life for all, requires rethinking the fundamentals of contemporary social organization, as the IPCC has pointed out. Its experts also emphasize the role of social movements in this transition.
In light of these conclusions and in the context of the environmental crisis, the question of the role of universities and the public engagement of researchers—while not new—is experiencing renewed interest and crystallizing many tensions. Is it acceptable for a climate summit to be held at an alma mater? For professors to participate in acts of civil disobedience related to climate change? Or for politicians to threaten to restrict funding for research projects related to environmental activism?
In her speech, the speaker will propose answers to these questions based on the conclusions of the report “Public engagement by academics: between academic freedom and professional ethics” by the University of Lausanne, which she helped to write.
