The Walloon Institute for Evaluation, Foresight and Statistics and the High Strategic Council are joining forces with Marie and Louis Pasteur University (Besançon, France) to organise a workshop on scientific-political cooperation: a unique experience bringing together 20 ‘scientists’ and 20 ‘politicians’ from a given region for a single day.

A workshop on scientific-political cooperation is a one-day event (9.00 am–5.00 pm) that brings together around forty participants from elected assemblies, public organisations and the research community, with the aim of enhancing their capacity for scientific advice. Through fictional case studies, they are asked to put themselves in the shoes of politicians, chief of staffs and researchers, in order to gain a better understanding of the dynamics of the relationship between science and politics.

The aim is to enable participants to experience, in a practical and collective way, the links between science and politics.

This workshop offers participants the opportunity to:

• to gain experience in using scientific data to inform decision-making

• to develop a strategy for providing scientific advice in a specific context (a region or a field)

• meet stakeholders and specialists from different fields

• deepen their understanding of a sector with which they are less familiar – either the scientific or the political sector – and gain an insight into the complexity of the relationship between these two sectors
