Socrates was sentenced to death in Athens in 399 BC on the pretext of having ‘corrupted the youth’. What would become of a modern-day Socrates, a philosophy lecturer at Duty Free University, pitted against a dean who is a devotee of ‘cancel culture’ and a vice-chancellor who applies Elon Musk’s methods? That is the question posed by this scathing play. Together with his students, Socrates would expose the confusion, point out the contradictions and attempt to restore a measure of reason and civility, but this would not prevent him from being swept away by the madness of the times. A play that invites reflection and resistance.
