"Socrate en Amérique"
Royal Academy of Belgium and UCLouvain Saint-Louis Brussels
-The play
Socrates was sentenced to death in Athens in 399 BC on the grounds that he had “corrupted youth”. What would become of a Socrates of today, a philosophy professor at Duty Free University, up against a dean who is a fan of cancel culture and a Rector who applies the methods of Elon Musk? That's the question posed by this caustic play. With his students, he will denounce the confusions, point out the contradictions, try to bring back a little reason and civility, but that won't stop him from being swept away by the madness of the times. A play for reflection and resistance.
The playwrights
They are the same age as Socrates and have the same profession of questioning the world; one is a lawyer and philosopher, the other an engineer and philosopher. Both have teaching as their profession and writing as their passion. Together they wrote L'Arche et la Tour (Editions Samsa, 2024), an ecological play that has been performed to great acclaim in Brussels and Namur.
The company
The Magasin d'Écriture Théâtrale's mission is to discover the theatre of contemporary French-language authors. Founded in 1989 by the theatre-maker Jean-Claude Idée, the MET was one of the first French-language theatres in Europe to use readings as a performance medium. The MET has teamed up with numerous theatres in Belgium, France, Switzerland and Quebec to present over 800 readings of newly written plays. It brings together talented professional actors.
