Cities and water: rewriting historical narratives

Campus Solbosch - NA.4.302

— 10:00 - 12:00

Since the 1980s, research on the interactions between urban societies and water (in Europe and in regions colonised by Europeans) has been enriched by numerous contributions. During this seminar, we will provide an overview of current research in this field and give Hélène Noizet (sociAMM 2025 visiting professor) the opportunity to present the results of her own research on this topic for the city of Paris in medieval times. She will be in discussion with Chloé Deligne (MMC and SociaAMM) and Davide Martino (MMC and SociAMM).

A professor of medieval history at Paris 8 University, Hélène Noizet works on urban morphology over the long term, first on the city of Tours, then on Paris and Saint-Denis. She studies the question of urban development by cross-referencing texts, archaeological excavations and plans: the formation of the urban fabric is analysed as a process that constantly re-evaluates inherited spaces, in constant interaction with the projects and practices of the actors involved. To this end, she coordinates the Alpage project, which is building a geohistorical reference database on medieval and modern Paris.
