Jean Massart, professor of botany at the Université Libre de Bruxelles, left his mark on the history of natural sciences in Belgium. A pioneer in ecology, he advocated studying plants in their natural environment. He was the first to denounce the destruction of nature and to call for the protection of the most remarkable natural sites.
