Ciné-Club: Tree-like narratives
La Conciergerie - 17, Avenue Emile De Mot 1000 Bruxelles
-The Neomura cherry tree (Japan), the Seja oak (Latvia) and the 100 knights (Italy). These beings of uncertain age have mobilised experimental film-makers and video artists to take up an incongruous challenge: to tell a story in which the human takes a tangent. Elsewhere, plant communities gossip and memories intertwine, as in the disputed forest of Paraguay's Gran Chaco, or the fortified forest of Buçaco, whose entrance was forbidden to women. While these tales are told by and for two-legged creatures, it is the surges of sap from our rooted companions that drive the plot. Narrations Arborescentes is a two-part exploration of the many ways in which trees can engage us and storytellers can respond. Putting fragments of atmosphere together, tracing a straight line from a mycorrhizal network - it's no mean feat. This double film club will be an opportunity to explore the issues involved.
Organised by La Cambre as part of the ‘Perspectives in plant art’ module and by Jade de Cock de Rameyen (Philixte and iiTSE).
