Astro-environmentalism: the polycentric governance of space debris

Avenue Franklin Roosevelt 39, 1050 Bruxelles - IEE R39 – Salle Geremek

— 12:30 - 14:00

The pollution of Earth's orbits by artificial debris is an environmental problem that is as urgent as it is neglected. With geopolitical factors hampering the adoption of a multilateral solution, several experts are advocating a polycentric system of governance, inspired by Elinor Ostrom's work on the commons. This presentation assesses the viability of such a proposal by combining a content analysis, a network analysis and a series of interviews.

Jean-Frédéric Morin is a full professor at Université Laval (Quebec, Canada). His research focuses on international institutions. He is particularly interested in the interactions between international institutions governing the environment.

Session chaired by Romain Weikmans, Université libre de Bruxelles - REPI and iiTSE
