The first Conference on the Transition Away from Fossil Fuels, held in Santa Marta (Colombia) in April 2026, aimed in particular to explore the conditions necessary to break free from economic dependence on fossil fuel extraction. This lock-in is caused not only by economic and financial mechanisms, but also by the rules that structure the global economy. Indeed, international trade, investment and financial regimes have historically helped to secure the exploitation of fossil resources and protect the interests linked to them. This seminar aims to analyse the role of international economic law in creating and perpetuating fossil fuel dependence, whilst exploring reforms that could facilitate a just and orderly transition away from fossil fuels.
