2026: A Decisive Year for the Global Fossil Fuel Phase-Out? Exploring the Geopolitical, Financial, and Legal Challenges Ahead
Fondation Universitaire – Universitaire Stichting Rue d’Egmontstraat 11, 1000 Brussels
— 09:00 - 17:15Workshop organized by Romain Weikmans & Matthias Petel as part of the projet "Dialogue sur la politique climatique extérieure belge"
The global phase-out of fossil fuels has emerged as a central – yet deeply contested – pillar of international climate action. Beyond its technical dimensions, it raises far-reaching geopolitical, financial, and legal questions. This one-day workshop aims to provide an interdisciplinary space for dialogue among policymakers, academics, and civil society representatives to explore these questions. Conceived as a preparatory discussion ahead of the First International Conference on Transitioning Away from Fossil Fuels, to be held in Santa Marta (Colombia) in April 2026, the workshop seeks to foster early exchanges and inform policy debates in the run-up to this landmark meeting.
